Special events are so much fun to plan. There are a lot of parts to consider from food to music to decorations. Table centerpieces are often the focal point that gets the most attention since guests are seated at the table. Since guests will be staring across the table at other guests for conversation, the centerpieces are seen a lot. Additionally, the centerpieces will hinder conversation or seamlessly disappear while people talk. The latter is preferred.
There are some tips to remember when planning centerpieces. Let’s discuss how to make the centerpieces stand out without standing in the way of good conversation.
Centerpiece size is important.
Consider the shape of the table. (Tables at Royal Affairs are all round tables.)
The height of centerpieces should be 10-12 inches or less or 24 inches or taller with a narrow trunk.
Vary the design at each table.
Consider items other than flowers.
Centerpiece size is important.
Centerpieces are in the center of the table, and as a result, they don’t have to be large to get attention. In this instance, the size should be in proportion to the table. An oversized centerpiece can crowd the table and cause people to seek conversation elsewhere. A modest-sized centerpiece on a 60-inch round table should occupy around 6 inches of space in the center. While a 60-inch round table can accommodate a centerpiece up to 18 inches, the remaining items that will occupy the table must be considered. With glassware, dishes, and flatware, the table becomes full very quickly. Guests may also need a place to set up their smaller personal items; the table will fill up quickly.
Consider the shape of the table.
Keep the shape of the table in mind as you plan. A centerpiece for a round table will not be the same size as a centerpiece on a rectangular table. Rectangle tables will require smaller centerpieces in diameter but possibly longer centerpieces in length to fill the table. A colorful sash across the length of a longer table can anchor the rest of the design. Greenery can drape the size of the table as well while the centerpiece is the focal point of the decor.
Height of centerpiece
On any table size or shape, the height of the centerpiece matters. Centerpieces should be no taller than 12 inches to maximize conversation across the table. However, centerpieces can also be taller than 24 inches with a narrow trunk to create visual height and not obstruct the view or conversation. When it comes to height, go very short or very tall. The last thing you want is a centerpiece that obstructs the view so that Uncle Fred removes it from the table entirely so he can see.
Vary the design at each table.
There are two ways to design the centerpieces. One is to keep every single table identical. This makes it very easy to set up, and the look is uniform. The second option is to vary the design of each table. For example, if you have 12 tables total, break them into groups of 3. Four centerpiece designs will be needed. One set of 3 tables with tall centerpieces over 24 inches, one set of 3 tables with centerpieces 12 inches or less, one set of 3 tables without a floral arrangement, and one set of 3 tables with flameless candles or something similar. This also conserves budget as floral arrangements can be a big chunk of the budget. Additionally, using the bridesmaid's bouquets as part of the table decor is a beautiful way to stretch the decorating budget and provides easy decor for the tables.
Consider items other than flowers.
Special occasions are a rare opportunity to share special moments with guests. Think of other items to use for table decor than flowers. Photos, awards, special memories, and even vintage recipe cards in a frame are a unique way to share special memories with your guests. These items also serve as conversation starters if guests are seated with people they may not know. Favorite books, candles, lanterns, photos in frames, geodes, seashells, potted plants, succulents, Christmas cactus, fruit, feathers, candlesticks, vintage cloches, and vintage items are a unique way to decorate the center of the table.
There are many ways to decorate tables at a reception, birthday, or other celebration. It’s important to keep a few things in mind to encourage conversation among guests.
